Wireless blackout alerts for California

Wireless messaging services company Metrocall and text messaging specialist Iris Wireless have been tapped by the California Office of Emergency Services to send alerts about impending electrical blackouts to California residents with wireless devices. California residents can sign up for the service by visiting www.irispoweralert.com or by calling Metrocall at 800-354-7243. The service will remain free through Labor Day. Aside from alerts about blackouts, subscribers also will get periodic news updates on California's power crisis, the two companies said.
