Weekly troubleshooting utilities update

Our weekly utilities update report is a list of updates for Mac utilities that have been released in the past week. Though a utility can be any tool that helps you perform a routine task (including image manipulation and synchronization), our focus in this column is to bring you those tools that help in troubleshooting Mac hardware and software problems.

Maintenance

In Maintenance utilities this week, CheckUp ($36) was updated to improve alerts and fix known bugs, as well as to add support for the most recent Mac models. The OS X tweaking and maintenance program MacPilot ($19.95) has fixed some small GUI and CPU usage issues, as well as added resizeable tooltips.

Lastly, IceClean was updated with a maintenance update to address minor bugs with the program.

Data Recovery

RescuePro Deluxe ($60) is a utility for recovering files off flash and other digital media that are used with cameras. This update has a new recovery engine that allows for faster scanning and support for new file types. The engine now supports memory devices up to 64GB in size.

File Management

A popular utility that I recommend is WhatSize ($12.99), which will catalog and present all the files on your disk in a graphical size representation and other views, to allow you to see where your drive space has gone. The program has been updated to fix issues with removable and fusefs drives, as well as the inability to move .Trash(es) folders to the trash.

DupeGuru ($19.95) is one of a few utilities that will locate duplicate files on disk so you can make better use of your drive space. The update for this program this week fixes broken HTML exporting.

Drivers

For people who use scanners that do not have OS X drivers, VueScan ($39.95) may allow you to continue scanning. The program has been updated to add support for Canon LiDE, Nikon CoolScan, and MicroTec ScanMaker scanners.
