Week ahead: Tech bellwethers report

Following are some of the notable technology-related events scheduled for the week of July 18. Earnings announcements will be in full swing this week, as numerous tech bellwethers are scheduled to report results.

Among the heap of companies revealing numbers are Microsoft, Amazon.com, eBay, Gateway, Sun Microsystems and SAP, to name a few. Analysts will no doubt be taking the pulse of various industry segments from these companies.

As far as conferences go, it's a double-the-pleasure week for Penguinistas. On Monday, the Linux Kernel Developers Summit will waddle into Ottawa, Ontario, and on Wednesday, the Ottawa Linux Symposium will start squawking.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco, the Energy Technology Investor Conference starts Monday and promises to show why investors are paying closer attention to energy technology companies right now.

• Lexmark International makes printers. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 96 cents a share.

• Sun Microsystems makes servers. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 4 cents a share.

• Texas Instruments makes chips and related technology. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 25 cents a share.

• EMC makes network storage products. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 8 cents a share.

• Motorola designs and makes chips used in numerous computing applications. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 18 cents a share.

• Seagate Technology makes hard disk drives used in computers. It's expected to report a breakeven fourth quarter.

• Siebel Systems makes servers and software. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 3 cents a share.

• Sprint offers local and long-distance calling services. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 18 cents a share.

• Symantec sells antivirus and network security products. It's expected to report a first-quarter profit of 34 cents a share.

• Maxtor offers a line of hard disk drives for desktop PCs. It's expected to report a second-quarter loss of 17 cents a share.

• eBay operates online auctions. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 27 cents a share.

• Ericsson is a maker of cell phones. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 29 cents a share.

• Lucent Technologies makes telecommunications gear and related technologies. It's expected to report a third-quarter profit of 2 cents a share.

• Nextel Communications is a wireless phone service provider. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 51 cents a share.

• Qualcomm develops digital wireless telecommunications products and services based on its code division multiple access, or CDMA, technology. It's expected to report a third-quarter profit of 53 cents a share.

• Redback Networks provides telecommunications networking equipment designed to let carriers and service providers offer high-speed Net access and services. It's expected to report a second-quarter loss of 10 cents a share.

• AT&T Wireless provides wireless service. It's expected to report a second-quarter loss of a penny a share.

• SAP makes customer relationship management software. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 28 cents a share.

• Gateway makes computers. It's expected to report a second-quarter loss of 28 cents a share.

• Online retail giant Amazon.com is expected to report a second-quarter profit of 19 cents a share.

• DoubleClick is a provider of Internet marketing and measurement services. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 4 cents a share.

• EarthLink is an Internet service provider. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 15 cents a share.
