Week ahead: Stepping out of the niche
Specialty trade shows--think Storage World 2002--take center stage in a quiet week for conventioneers. In a light earnings lineup, investors hope DVR maker TiVo will record something good.
Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of Aug. 19 through Aug. 23. Have you taken your summer vacation yet? This might be the week to do it, with just a few specialty trade shows, the lightest smattering of earnings reports and a tiny pinch of economic news on tap.
The trade show action is highlighted by Storage World Conference 2002 in San Jose, Calif., which turns the spotlight on the data storage sector of the tech industry. Companies reporting earnings include digital video recorder maker TiVo and networking software maker Novell.

- All the big and little names in data storage will be showing off their wares at Storage World Conference 2002, running Aug. 20-22 in San Jose, Calif. Keynote speakers include Hewlett-Packard storage honcho Howard Elias and Network Appliance CEO Dan Warmenhoven.
Wednesday, Aug. 21
- If you aren't nervous enough yet, just head to Sector 5, research group Gartner's "global summit exploring cyberterrorism and the targets of critical infrastructures." The event runs Aug. 21-23 in Washington, D.C., and speakers include the FBI's Ron Dick, Naval War College professor Craig Koerner and SecurityFocus President Stephanie Fohn.

Monday, Aug. 19
- Hewlett-Packard spinoff Agilent Technologies makes test and measurement equipment. It's expected to report a third-quarter loss of 15 cents a share.
Tuesday, Aug. 20
- Sycamore Networks makes optical networking equipment. It's expected to report a loss of 9 cents a share for its fourth quarter and a loss of 46 cents a share for the 2002 fiscal year.
Wednesday, Aug. 21
- Electronics Boutique is one of the leading specialty retailers of video and computer games. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 3 cents a share.
Thursday, Aug. 22
- ADC Telecommunications sells networking equipment, software and services. It's expected to report a third-quarter loss of 6 cents a share.
Friday, Aug. 23
- Concurrent Computer sells computers for video-on-demand applications. It's expected to report a profit of 4 cents a share for its fourth quarter and 3 cents a share for the 2002 fiscal year.

- Leading Economic Indicators summarizes previously reported totals such as building permits and unemployment claims. It's expected to dip 0.6 percent for July, compared with flat results the previous month.
Tuesday, Aug. 20
- Trade Balance measures the flow of imports vs. exports. The June trade deficit is expected to dip to $37.4 billion, from $37.6 billion the previous month.
Thursday, Aug. 22
- Initial Claims is the nationwide total of new claims filed for unemployment compensation. The figure for the week ended Aug. 17 is expected to dip to 380,000, from 388,000 the week before.
