Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of Dec. 1.

It's show time! After a sluggish Thanksgiving week, trade shows and investment conferences will be gearing up again. Credit Suisse First Boston will hold its ever-popular annual technology conference in the Southwest, while Linux fans can get a dose of information at Jupitermedia's Enterprise Linux Forum.

And a smattering of companies are still rolling out their quarterly reports, National Semiconductor among them. The chipmaker will be issuing its third-quarter summary.

Monday, Dec. 2

  • A Los Angeles federal judge will continue to hear arguments from Hollywood, the recording industry and Sharman Networks, parent company of file-swapping service Kazaa, as to why an ongoing copyright suit against Sharman should be decided without a full trial. Both the copyright holders and Sharman want the case concluded immediately, with a so-called summary judgment. But the copyright holders want Kazaa shut down, while Sharman, of course, doesn't. The larger issue revolves around whether Australia-based Sharman can be held liable under U.S. copyright law.

Tuesday, Dec. 3

  • Linux lovers can learn how to cut costs with the open-source operating system, as well as reduce their risk and increase architectural flexibility, at Jupitermedia's Enterprise Linux Forum, planned for Dec. 3-4 in Boston.

  • Call it show and tell. Tech companies will get an opportunity to strut their stuff and tell their stories at Credit Suisse First Boston's annual technology conference, scheduled for Dec. 2-6 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

  • Step into the world of wireless networking and integrated communications at Jupitermedia's 802.11 Planet Fall Conference & Expo, set for Dec. 3-5 in Santa Clara, Calif.

    • Take me to the islands. Technology trends and educational seminars will be covered at Hawaii ITEC, to be held Dec. 4-5, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

    Thursday, Dec. 5

    • edaForum02 looks at overcoming gaps between systems companies and chipmakers that are collaborating on electronic design automation projects. It's scheduled for Dec. 5-6 in Hanover, Germany.

  • Strategies for rebuilding investor confidence and dealing with changed customer expectations in a weak information technology spending environment will be covered at the seventh annual BusinessWeek Digital Economy Conference, called Mapping the Post-Hype Marketplace, to be held Dec. 5-6 in San Francisco.

    Tuesday, Dec. 3

    • ADC Telecommunications offers networking software and systems integration services to services providers for high-speed data, video and voice delivery. The company is expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 9 cents a share.

  • Cable Design Technologies makes high-bandwidth network connectivity products, such as fiber-optic cables and connectors. The company is expected to report a first-quarter profit of 6 cents a share.

  • Finisar develops fiber-optic subsystems and network performance testing systems. The company is expected to report a second-quarter loss of 8 cents a share.

    • Wednesday, Dec. 4

    • T/R Systems develops software to transform digital copies into printer-on-demand systems. It's expected to report a third-quarter loss of 9 cents a share.

    Friday, Dec. 6

    Monday, Dec. 2

    • Auto and Truck Sales is the total of domestically produced vehicles sold. November auto sales are expected to rise to 5.5 million, from 5.3 million in the previous month. Truck sales are expected to also climb to 7.5 million, from 7.1 million in the previous month.

    Thursday, Dec. 5

    • Initial Claims is the weekly total of new claims filed for unemployment compensation. The total is expected to rise to around 375,000 for the week ended Nov. 30, from 364,000 the previous week.

    Friday, Dec. 6

    • Consumer Credit is the total level of debt held by U.S. consumers. The October total is expected to fall to $7.3 billion, from $9.9 billion the previous month.

  • The Unemployment Rate is the percentage of American workers looking for jobs. The November rate is expected to grow to 5.8 percent, from 5.7 percent the previous month.
