Week ahead: A good face

Last week's financial disappointments will hopefully give way to some joy as major media and communications companies report earnings.

Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of Oct. 21 through Oct. 25.

No, no, no--if you want to inspire a recovery, you need tell people good news.

After last week's bummers from , and others, the tech industry will have another chance to dispel the gloom this week, as some major media and communications players report results.

AOL Time Warner, beset by subscriber numbers and , will try to put on a good face, a task that will be much harder for communications equipment catastrophes and JDS Uniphase. Conglomerates Alltel and , meanwhile, show that not everything is gloom and doom in the communications sector.

Away from the financial pages, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates will unwrap the new of the company's MSN Internet service. Gates will then cement a new relationship with Siebel Systems by speaking at the e-business software giant's annual user confab.

    • Durable Goods measures the value of all goods shipped or ordered with an intended lifespan of three years or more. The total is expected to shrink 2.5 percent in September, after a 0.4 percent decline the previous month.

  • Home Sales tracks housing activity. September sales of existing homes are expected to rise to 5.45 million, from 5.28 million the previous month. New home sales are expected to dip to 980,000 from 996,000 the previous month.
