WD updates My Passport portable drives with new look, larger capacity
The new My Passport Ultra, Ultra for Mac and Ultra Metal portable drives now deliver up to 4TB of storage space.
WD's popular My Passport portable drives have just found a way to become even more appealing. The company announced today the refreshed version of the My Passport Ultra, My Passport Ultra for Mac and an all-new My Passport Ultra Metal.
All of these drives have up to 4TB of storage space, huge for a portable drive, and support USB 3.0. Unfortunately none of them offer a USB-C port; instead they all have regular Micro-USB 3.0 ports.
The Mac version of the drive is basically the same as the Windows version, except it's reformatted in HFS+, the Mac native file system. It also doesn't include backup software, opting for support for Time Machine instead. The Metal version of the drive has an aluminum housing instead of a plastic one and includes WD SmartWare Pro, a more comprehensive backup application than the WD Backup of the Ultra.
All three drives feature 256-bit AES hardware encryption with optional password protection to help safeguard against unauthorized access. The new 4TB version of the My Passport Ultra is available now at the suggested price of $160; the other two models will be available later this year.
