First Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay showcases gunplay, choices, horse physics
Seriously, look at the way those horses move.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is almost certainly the most anticipated gaming release of 2018. We've seen multiple cinematic trailers, but none of them answered a key question: What will Red Dead Redemption 2 play like? Today, Rockstar not only provided a hint of an answer, but showcased new systems and improvements from its beloved processor.
The way in which playable character Arthur Morgan engages with people across the world. "Your guns aren't the only way to interact with the environment," the video's narrator says, highlighting that Red Dead Redemption 2 will broaden your options beyond gunplay. Morgan is shown performing non-lethal submissions, greeting or antagonizing strangers or addressing a passerby directly while on horseback. We've come a long way from either running into, punching or shooting Rockstar game NPCs.
But that's not to say Red Dead Redemption 2 will be without guns.
Gamers familiar with Rockstar's earlier title Max Payne 3 will be well acquainted with the style of shooting demonstrated by the GIF above, and like Payne, Morgan's weaponry is limited, with new options requiring returning to camp or scavenging.
It's easy to forget given the wild success of the PS4 and Xbox One ports of GTA V, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar's first game built from the ground up for the current console generation, and in sequences like below, it's clear they've stepped up to the graphical plate. If this trailer holds water, we could be looking at a new high bar come release day.
And while you're here, let's just allow the horse animation and physics work speak for themselves. How can we ever go back to Red Dead Redemption horses or even The Witcher 3's Roach?
It's been eight years since the original Red Dead Redemption was released. It was arguably Rockstar's best game to date, and many call it one of the best video games ever made. Here's hoping the sequel will live up to the hype.
The game is set for release on October 26, 2018.
