Wal-Mart.com has named Jeanne Jackson, former chief executive of Banana Republic, to head its newly revamped site, the company said today.

Jackson, 48, will take over the Internet operations of retail giant Wal-Mart, which recently announced that it would turn the unit into a standalone company. Accel Partners, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm, is backing the venture, and Wal-Mart will still own a majority stake in the spinoff.

The appointment came months after the company completed an overhaul of its Web site in January, two months behind schedule. Analysts have long predicted that Walmart.com would become one of the top retailers on the Web, but so far the company has failed to make a large impact online.

Jackson leaves Banana Republic after almost four years. She will report to Wal-Mart.com's board of directors, which includes Wal-Mart's chairman Rob Walton and chief executive H. Lee Scott.
