It's the time of year when we're most likely to be found sitting in front of an open fire, warming our cockles with a glass of Tactical Nuclear Penguin, fuzzle-headedly reflecting on 12 months ill-spent. In that spirit we're delighted to wholeheartedly recommend our sister site GameSpot's Best of 2009 awards, in which you can pontificate to your heart's content over your favourite electronic entertainment of the year.

The 'Spot allows you to vote in a plethora of categories, from best games on each platform to special achievements such as best story and best voice acting, to dubious honours such as 'Most Despicable Use of In-Game Advertising'. We're pleased to report that the important 'Character Most Likely to Fail a Performance-Enhancing Drug Test' award is being led in the early voting by Mr 50 Cent for his sweary crime opus 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand.

Use the flashy menu on the right-hand side to find your favourite genre or console, or go to the games index to vote for every category your bestest game is nominated in. The editors' winners will be revealed in stages, starting with Special Achievements tonight and finishing with Game of the Year on Christmas Day. Readers' Choice winners will be announced on 27 January, to give you all plenty of time to vote, along with your votes for the most anticipated game of 2010 (*cough* Mass Effect 2 *cough*).

Feel free to post your complaints about the nominations in the comments section below and we'll pass them on to our beloved colleagues. We'll start you off: why can't we vote for Street Fighter IV as Game of the Year? And why can't we vote for Empire: Total War as Best PC Game? Well, GameSpot?
