Vignette to buy RandomNoise

Internet publishing software vendor Vignette plans to acquire RandomNoise, a maker of Web site design software.

Internet publishing software vendor Vignette plans to acquire RandomNoise, a maker of Web site design software, the company said today.

The Austin, Texas-based company also announced today that it has received a $14.3 million boost of venture-capital financing that company executives said they will use to catapult Vignette forward as it shifts from start-up to growth phase.

Details of the RandomNoise acquisition were not disclosed. But Vignette said it will integrate RandomNoise's technology into future releases of its product line, including its flagship suite, StoryServer 3, which enables users to build, manage, and deliver Web-based applications, such as online publishing.

Vignette claims a long list of Web-based clients that produce their sites using StoryServer, including CNET and Ziff-Davis .

Vignette's software is based partly on technology developed in-house by CNET, which sold it to Vignette in exchange for a stake in the company. (CNET is the publisher of NEWS.COM.)

Vignette is expected to go public next year.
