VerticalNet to sell online store unit

Business-to-business e-commerce firm VerticalNet announced Wednesday it plans sell a business unit that runs online stores for small to medium-size businesses. The company said the unit doesn't support its new focus on developing enterprise software. The company has dabbled with several different business models and strategies since it was founded in 1995, but has yet to find one that sticks. In its latest move to become a business software company, it acquired private e-marketplace firm Atlas Commerce in December.
