UTStarcom's rugged phone

Kent was a senior managing editor at CNET News. A veteran of CNET since 2003, he reviewed the first iPhone and worked in both the London and San Francisco offices. When not working, he's planning his next vacation, walking his dog or watching planes land at the airport (yes, really).

One of the oddest-looking (and oddest-named) phones we've seen at CTIA is the UTStarcom GzOne Type V. Watch out, Nextel, as UTStarcom is promising that the phone is resistant to water and shock. And from what we've seen, it certainly looks like it could stand up to a few blows. Features include EV-DO support, a 65,000-color display, a 2-megapixel camera, text and multimedia messaging, and a speakerphone. Though the display model in UTStarcom's booth was running on Verizon Wireless, UTStarcom wouldn't confirm the Type V would end up with that carrier. See our for pictures.
