USB's all-in-one cable gets IEC's stamp of approval

IEC formally adopts USB Type-C as the international standard for delivering data and power.

The International Electrotechnical Commission hopes the multi-purpose USB Type-C cable will reduce waste and add convenience for customers. That's why the IEC on Wednesday formally adopted the USB Type-C as its new international standard.

Specifically, the IEC adopted the Type-C connector, along with its two way power delivery system and the high-speed data delivery of USB 3.1. The IEC made the announcement in conjunction with the USB Implementers Forum.

Since USB Type-C is meant to fit into sleeker devices and provide power along with quick data delivery, it might eventually help people reduce the clutter of cables behind their computer. Check out our guide for a full rundown of what USB Type-C does.
