USA! USA! Canadians give Americans an online pat on the back

These may be turbulent times for the United States, but our neighbor to the north thinks we're still pretty cool.

This election season has been tough on Americans, what with the contentious debates, disturbing news stories, and friendships divided along party lines. Could almost be enough to give a young country an insecurity complex.

But our neighbors to the north have come to the rescue. The Garden, a creative agency based in Toronto, decided to pass on some much-needed praise to Canada's southern neighbor with its Tell America It's Great initiative.

"Seems America could use some cheering up right about now," the agency's site reads. "As their closest friends and neighbors, we thought we should take a minute to help remind them that no matter how bad things might seem at the moment, there are lots of reasons why we think they're still pretty great."

The agency's video features a number of Canadians citing everything from jazz and bluegrass to America's national parks to citizens' generosity to charities. "You invented the internet," says one. "You guys are going to get humanity to Mars," says another.

The campaign encourages others to post similar messages and photos online, using the hashtag #tellamericaitsgreat. And the idea has taken off, with Canadians and others bringing attention to America's best qualities, both large and small.

And many Americans have gone online to thank their northern friends for the kind words. After all, elections eventually end, and presidential terms don't last forever, but that border isn't going anywhere.
