Updated: Honda to bring fuel-cell cars to market in 2008?

We noted earlier that a Japanese newspaper reported that Honda is intending to bring its fuel-cell cars to market in Japan and the United States in 2008 but that the info had not been verified. Well, now it's official: a translation on Honda's Web site of a speech given on Saturday by Honda's president and CEO, Takeo Fukui, confirms that Honda will release a production version of its FCX fuel-cell car into the Japanese and American markets in 2008, a year earlier than previously planned.

Fukui said that "in addition to its environmental performance, I think you will find that this new vehicle will be as fun to drive as any Honda." We're not sure if he is including the 2006 Honda S2000 in that equation, but we should be able to make a better assessment after we get a close-up view of the latest version of the Honda FCX concept fuel-cell vehicle at the Paris Auto Show later this week.
