Apple Support Discussions user "TSWilkes" reports:

"After a year and a half of trouble-free Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule my sparse bundle failed to mount. I could no longer get TM to mount my MBP's sparse bundle and after trying several things including Disk Utility to repair the disk I ended up having to delete and start fresh.

I deleted the sparse bundle, re-chose with disk I wanted TM to use, and have been stuck in the "Preparing" phase for over 48 hours. After a few minutes a new sparse bundle was created/named/mounted on my desktop, but nothing has happened since. I get the window that only comes up during your initial backup, but again, it has been Preparing with no progress for two days. My MBP isn't even working it seems, no disk activity, no processor usage, just endless preparing..."

This issue appears to be related to both Time Machine and Mozy attempting to back up data at the same time. The Mozy backup process causes the Time Machine process to stall and ultimately freeze. The solution required involves uninstalling the Mozy software, restarting your Mac, and activating your Time Machine backup. It is unclear if the issue is with the Mozy software or Time Machine, but we will keep you updated if either Mozy or Apple fix the problem.
