Unisys (UIS) today reported improved third-quarter results, driven in part by profits generated in its computer systems business.

Unisys reported net profits of $14.2 million for the quarter ending September 30, compared with a loss of $32.2 million a year ago. Revenues reached $1.63 billion for the quarter, compared with $1.49 billion last year.

"We were particularly pleased with the performance in our computer systems business," said James Unruh, chairman and chief executive. "The computer systems group has made excellent progress in working through a major product transition."

He added the company will meet its revised shipment schedule for large enterprise servers. The shipments were earlier delayed as testing on the servers' new chip architecture took longer than originally planned.

Earlier this year, Unisys expanded its desktop family with a new line of Aquanta desktop and notebook PCs.
