To kick off the series I've been plumbing the depths with members of Subterranea Britannica, an online community dedicated to unearthing and exploring Britain's abandoned underground spaces. From disused tube stations to old nuclear submarine bases, their members get together to discover the hidden world beneath our feet. It was built as a back-up headquarters for the war effort in case the Cabinet War Rooms in Westminster were bombed. In the end it was never used, and after the war fell into disrepair.
