UMC, one of the world's top chip foundries or companies that manufacturer chips under contract for others, says its getting ready to expand its 90-nanometer production capacity. The company is planning to expand 90-nanometer production capacity at its Fab 12A chip plant in Taiwan and also to move to volume 90-nanometer manufacturing at its UMCi subsidiary in Singapore, it said in a statement.

Currently, 90 nanometers, which describes the average size of the features inside of a chip, is considered to be the leading edge of chip manufacturing. A number of other companies are moving toward it from 130-nanometer chip production. They include Intel and IBM, which have already begun producing 90-nanometer chips at their own factories.
