Twitter users in the UK might be able to receive tweets via text message again, according to a story on paidContent:UK.

O2 is reportedly in talks with the micro-blogging service to thrash out a deal to enable UK customers to use it on their phones without having to incur data charges run up by applications and Web browsing on Twitter.com.

Back in the day, free text messages cost the start-up a pretty penny here in the UK, and the option was canned beyond the US, Canada and India in the middle of last year.

Since then, however, Twitter has exploded into the mainstream, and no doubt some kind of commercial deal to bring SMS functionality back to the UK would be highly lucrative.

We contacted O2 for comment, but a spokesperson hasn't yet responded to our request.
