Time to get more out of your Uber ride.
Visa and Uber said Tuesday they have teamed up to create Uber Local Offers, a rewards program within the ride-hailing app. After you enroll in the program, you can start generating points for every dollar you spend using your Visa card at specific stores and restaurants. Every 100 points can be redeemed for $10 off a future Uber ride.
The service, available only to Visa cardholders, will be rolled out in phases to Uber riders in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Local Offers serves as another way for Visa to grow its influence beyond just payments, with the company using its global payments network to help merchants draw in new shoppers. The rewards program is powered by Visa Commerce Network, a service the company introduced in January that allows merchants to create targeted rewards and discounts for their customers.
Visa plans to keep expanding Visa Commerce Network, so airlines could perhaps connect their customers to local stores or hotels, or events ticketing services can direct people to restaurants. Uber Local Offers is one of the first permanent services using the new network, which Visa has been testing in different ways this year. It worked with Uber before on some short-term discounts, such as Uber savings for Boston riders who ate at their local Shake Shack.
Terry Angelos, Visa's vice president of offers and loyalty, said his company doesn't share specific information or demographics about customers with participating merchants. Instead, Visa provides companies with general information on how many people are taking advantage of the deals.
