Uber partners with Chinese payment solution Alipay

Uber has announced a partnership with Alipay that will allow Chinese customers to pay in yuan around the globe.

Chinese Uber customers will now be able to pay for their Uber rides in local currency yuan, no matter where they are, thanks to a deal between the ride-sharing company and online payment platform Alipay. According to a Reuters report, Uber payment via Alipay will be available in over 400 cities around the world.

Payment via Alipay, which is operated by Alibaba affiliate Ant Financial Services Group, has been available in mainland China since 2014, and Hong Kong and Macau since earlier in 2016. Expanding the use of Alipay around the world means that Chinese Uber customers will no longer have to worry about dual currencies, or currency conversions, for Uber.

Alibaba has previously invested in Uber rivals Didi Chuxing, formerly Didi Kuaidi, headquartered in Beijing, and Lyft, headquartered in San Francisco.

Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
