Twitter would love all world leaders to tweet like Trump
Political debate and the influential figures who start it are bringing new users to the struggling social network.
Politicians are to Twitter what Kardashians are to Instagram, and Twitter is loving it.
US President Donald Trump has become one of the most prolific tweeters of our times, using Twitter for everything from sounding off about news outlets he disagrees with to announcing policy decisions and key personnel appointments.
It's conversation starters like these generated by influential figures that cause people to flock to the social network, said Chief Operating Officer Anthony Noto in a Bloomberg Television interview on Monday
"We'd love it if every world leader used Twitter as their primary mechanism to talk to their constituencies," said Noto. "The more that happens, the better we are going to be at showing what's going on in the world."
The social network's monthly users increased by 9 million in the first three months of 2017, which it attributed to "new and resurrected users following more news and political accounts." Noto didn't draw parallels between the jump in users and Trump's Twitter use, but did allow that the president had drawn attention to the platform.
Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.
