Twitter in a tizzy as Tim Tebow signs with NY Mets

The onetime college football star and NFL flameout sends the social network into overdrive as the Mets sign him to play minor league baseball.

Oh, the power of Tim Tebow.

Twitter went into a tizzy Thursday after the New York Mets tweeted that they've signed the former college and pro football quarterback to a minor league baseball contract.

There were more than 61,000 tweets (and counting) -- good, bad and ugly -- amassing into a tidal wave of a trending topic related to the Mets' signing of the polarizing Tebow, who last played professionally for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He'd gone on to become a respectable ESPN football analyst and reality TV show host.

The nod to Tebow by the defending National League champs came after he worked out for 28 Major League Baseball teams in Los Angeles last week.

Maybe Scott Derek's tweet featuring intense Mets manager Terry Collins (no relation) speaks for many fans as the team battles to get back into the playoffs.

Interestingly enough, Tebow makes no mention on his own Twitter account of joining the Mets. His last baseball-related tweet came a week and a half ago:
