Twitter is run by potheads, suggests famed investor Thiel

Those who worry about the world's (lack of) direction are concerned about those who are driving it to its digital demise.

Who are these people? What are they thinking? Are they high?

To this last question, Peter Thiel, storied investor in such progressive organizations as Facebook, has an answer. Roughly speaking: yes. At least in the case of Twitter.

I confess that I have sat in Alta restaurant, just across the road from Twitter HQ, and marveled at the vacant expressions of its customers. I assumed this was just because they're engineers.

Thiel, though, has a different assessment. Appearing on CNBC, he offered this: "Twitter is hard to evaluate. They have a lot of potential. It's a horribly mismanaged company -- probably a lot of pot-smoking going on there."

Some might think this reasonable. Pot is so close to being legal everywhere, because vast swathes of the population have token to it.

But to imagine that this is the reason why Twitter has been slightly slow in embracing such concepts as profit is to give, as Bon Jovi almost sang, drugs a bad name.

It might well be that Twitter's management simply isn't terribly good. It might be that they're the sorts who, once they've made a little money for themselves, just want to have a fine time, baby.

Judging others, though, is a complex process.

What should one think of someone who, say, believes in floating islands of libertarianism out at sea? Or someone who pays young people $100,000 not to go to college?

Could such ideas have come into the head of Peter Thiel with the assistance of not-entirely-legal substances? Or are some people just naturally and chemically superior to others?
