Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.3: Agfa scanners follow-up

CNET staff
Yesterday we posted an email message from Agfa stating a lack of support for Agfa scanners under OS X 10.3 and, in fact, stating that "Agfa scanners are not Mac OS x 10.3 compatible."

A number of MacFixIt readers have written in to tell us that their Agfa scanners are working fine under OS X 10.3, despite Agfa's statement to the contrary. We've had positive reports about the Agfa SnapScan Touch, the SnapScan 1212u using ScanWise 2fc2, and the DuoScan f40 using Fotolook X v3.6. In fact, oddly enough, reader John Whyle reports that his Agfa 1236 didn't work with OS X until upgrading to Panther.

On the other hand, some of those users who have reported success have also noted that not all functionality is available. For example, Thomas Holmberg reports that an Agfa SnapScan e50 using ScanWise 2.1fc2 will scan, but only to TIFF format, and it will not support 16-bit scanning.

We also noted that many Agfa scanners will work using the third-party scanner software VueScan. Several readers also recommended the third-party software SilverFast and the open-source-related project TWAIN SANE.
