Troubleshooting Java 1.4.2 update: Applets broken in Safari; fix

For those who have had their Java applet running ability squashed via the Java 1.4.2/Safari 1.2 update combination, the answer may be (as is the case with some Safari-specific issues), deleting the entire Java 1.4.2 installation obtained through Software Update and re-installing from the standalone updater available from Apple's Web site.

These files can be found in:

• /System/Java/
• /Library/Preferences/com.apple.java.util.prefs.plist
• /Applications/Utilities/Java/
• /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Java Applet.plugin

Some users have had success with deleting only the last (Java Applet.plugin) file and then re-installing the standalone updater.
