Troubleshooting iPhoto 4: photo sharing; importing large Libraries; miscalculated file sizes

Problems with photo sharing Reader David Eding reports problems sharing an iPhoto Library if both the host Mac and the Mac accessing the shared iPhoto Library attempt to run slide shows containing the same shared pictures:

"A sharing problem can occur. It will eventually happen every time I run it for an extended period of time. I suspect that when... both shows attempt to display the same picture that there is a winner and a loser. The winner continues running normally and the loser's slide show halts, displaying a sharing error."

Problems importing large Libraries We've received a few reports where users with extremely large iPhoto 2 libraries (e.g., >10,000 photos) have experienced problems after installing iPhoto 4. Specifically, when iPhoto 4 attempts to import their iPhoto 2 libraries, or when the user tries to import the original photos, iPhoto 4 either crashes or corrupts photos. MacFixIt reader Lawrence Husick writes:

"I have a library of over 12000 photos. After installing iPhoto4, I tried to import them. 16 hours later, iPhoto crashed and will not run again."

Miscalculated file sizes Yesterday we covered an issue where iPhoto 4 miscalculates files sizes for some photos. We noted that some users have been able to get iPhoto to reflect the actual file size of a photo by cropping it and then immediately undoing the crop. A MacFixIt reader notes that he was able to get the file sizes corrected by dragging the offending images to the Desktop to copy them, deleting the original, and then dragging the copies from the Desktop back into iPhoto.
