Following the release of yesterday's Froyo update for Telstra variants of HTC Desire, there has been a bunch of criticism posted on various blogs and forums about various problems users are experiencing in installing the new firmware.

After successfully installing the firmware on a number of Desire handsets in the office, we were surprised to hear about difficulties people were having with the update. Below we've posted our update process, but we'd love people to post their issues in the comments below and we'll do our best to help out. If we come across questions that need special attention we'll pass them on to our friends at HTC and see if we can get a response.

Update process

Firstly, a warning: updating with the new firmware will wipe your phone's memory. If there is information you want to keep, we suggest you save it to the SD card (especially contacts and SMS messages) or explore one of the many backup utilities on the Android Market. (StOlive in our forum suggests MyBackup).

  1. Download HTC Sync 3.0 and the updater on to your PC.
  2. Install Sync 3.0, this is important as it installs USB drivers.
  3. Connect your phone to the PC with a USB cable and wait until you have a connection in HTC Sync.
  4. Once it's connected, run the updater.
  5. Follow the prompts, checking the necessary boxes.
  6. Wait until the installer has completed the process and your phone has rebooted.
  7. Set up your phone as you did when you first bought it.

If you followed similar steps but still run aground, let us know in the talkback below and we'll try to get you some information to get you back on track.

Update: As several of our readers have noted, Telstra has just confirmed that an over-the-air is now available and that using this method won't affect the data stored on your handset. To access the OTA update on your phone press the Menu key, then Settings > About Phone > System software updates > Check now. Shame this wasn't available from day one.
