TrendNet expands its green portfolio with TEG-S80Dg switch
TrendNet releases a new power-saving eight-port switch and plans to continue its green initiatives in networking.
LAS VEGAS--TrendNet was one of the first networking vendors, together with D-Link, to start the green-networking initiative more than a year go. The company invented and implements what it calls GreenNet technology in most of its networking products.
The company announced Friday the latest addition to its green product portfolio, the eight-port Gigabit GreenNet switch, model TEG-S80Dg, which uses significantly less energy compared with traditional products of the same type.
GreenNet is a TrendNet switch-based technology that determines and supplies the appropriate amount of electrical power to each hardwired switching port as required by the connected device, the port, or the length of the connected Ethernet cable. GreenNet technology can reduce port-based power consumption by up to 70 percent, according to TrendNet.
GreenNet solutions automatically detect if an Ethernet port is not in use and will reduce the amount of power sent to the respective unused port. A port may be unused when no device is connected to it, or when a device that is connected to the port is powered down or in standby mode. Less power is required to send data over shorter cable lengths, which are also detected automatically.
TrendNet says GreenNet technology functions automatically, requires no management, and has no effect on product performance.
According to Zak Wood, director of global marketing for TrendNet, the company has released 14 green products in the last 12 months, including the TEG-S80Dg switch, and plans to release another 10 in 2010.
Green aspects aside, according to TrendNet, the TEG-S80Dg switch offers a total switching capacity of 16Gbps. It comes with a five-year limited warranty and will be available from TrendNet's online and retail partners this month. It will sell for an estimated $49.99.
