Toshiba slashes prices
Toshiba is cutting prices on its Equium line of commercial PCs and monitors by as much as 22 percent.
Toshiba slashed prices on models ranging from the low-end to the high-end. Monitor prices were cut also.
The price for the Equium 5160D has been reduced by 8 percent, from the old street price of $1,469 to $1,349. This model comes wit a 166-MHz Pentium MMX processor, 32MB of memory, and a 2.0GB hard drive.
An Equium 5200D, with a 200-MHZ Pentium MMX processor and a 2.5GB hard drive, has been reduced from $1,609 to $1,459, or 9 percent.
The price for the 26-MHz Pentium II Equium 6260M has been reduced from $2,669 to $2,199 or 17 percent, the company said.
In addition, the company cut the price of its TekBright 700PM 17 monitor from $699 to $649, or 7 percent.
A company spokesperson said Toshiba is responding to business users' needs for lower priced PCs.
These prices cuts follow recent reports about the erosion of its once-unassailable spot at the top of the notebook world. Price competition from major and secondary manufacturers is raising the competitive temperature in all segments of the PC industry including the notebook arena.
