Ewan McGregor will play the adult version of Danny Torrance, the kid from The Shining, in a sequel to the 1980 horror film.

The original movie, directed by Stanley Kubrick, was based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name. Likewise, the sequel will be based on King's 2013 novel Doctor Sleep, which was a follow-up to The Shining.

The sequel's story sees an alcoholic Danny struggling with the ghosts of his past -- and that's not just a metaphor -- as he works in a hospice where his supernatural powers draw unwanted attention.

There's been renewed interest in adapting King's work following the enormous success of the 2017 movie It. Doctor Sleep's director is Mike Flanagan, who also helmed an adaptation of King novella Gerald's Game for Netflix.

For sci-fi fans, McGregor is best known for playing a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel triology.
