No dried bones about it, Universal Pictures is going for the big shebang spectacle with its revamped, revitalized and rebooted take on the classic monster movie "The Mummy." The studio released the film's first full-length trailer on Sunday and it's going to hit you right in the nose cone with a plague of birds.
There's no Boris Karloff-style mummy here. Instead we get Algerian actress Sofia Boutella from "Star Trek Beyond" as the ancient evil who has risen to wreak havoc upon the world. Action star Tom Cruise stands in her way.
The trailer spends a lot of time on an extended airplane disaster scene filled with weightless moments and screaming. "Welcome to a new world of gods and monsters," a very serious voice intones.
This is the stepping-out party for Universal's extended monster universe, which we expect to feature interconnected films covering the adventures of classic characters like Dracula, the Wolf Man and even the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
So far, it looks like any possible quaint holdovers from the classic 1932 "The Mummy" will get left behind in a blaze of explosions and special effects.
"The Mummy" is due in theaters in the summer of 2017.
