"In your face, Neil Armstrong!" The first trailer for the "The Martian" lays out the simple but intractable problem facing Matt Damon's astronaut: how do you survive when you're stranded 140 million miles from home?
In "The Martian", Matt Damon is astronaut Mark Watney, crew member of the yearlong ARES mission to Mars. Lost in a terrible storm, Watney is left behind by his crew and has to improvise a way of surviving on the unfamiliar planet.
The trailer follows the day after a teaser video introduced us to the crew of the ARES mission. In the teaser, which parodies the fun videos beamed back from the International Space Station, Damon wanders the Hermes spacecraft introducing us to his crewmates.
Damon's fellow "Interstellar" star Jessica Chastain is the mission commander, leading the pilot, played by Michael Peña, the computer expert, played by Kate Mara, and the surgeon, played by Sebastian Stan. Aksel Hennie is introduced as "a German astronaut", and just in case we didn't catch his nationality, he is also seen eating sausage. He's German, d'y'see. From Germany.
The movie's all-star cast also includes Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover, Sean Bean and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The teaser video is the first on a YouTube channel called ARES: Live, and the video includes purported tweets from viewers using relevant hashtags. "We'll find aliens before the Cubs win", reads one cheeky post in response to Watney's tribute to his home town of Chicago.
Directed by Ridley Scott, "The Martian" is based on the 2012 novel by Andy Weir. Originally self-published a chapter at a time, the ebook became a best-seller and saw Weir sell the novel to audiobook and print publishers.
"The Martian" blasts off in cinemas in 3D beginning on November 25, 2015, in the US.
