The iPod ain't dead yet

Apple holds a town-hall meeting where he hints at new, OSX-based iPods.

Never in my career have I been so happy that I write about MP3 players rather than cell phones, but--sadly--the existence of the iPhone will not shelter me from Apple news mania forever. According to Endgaget, during the same meeting where Steve Jobs announced that all Apple employees would be receiving a free iPhone, he also mentioned that new, "OSX-based" iPods are in development. I am sensing a holiday release, but I'm no psychic--has anyone figured out an equation yet for impending Apple release versus effect on hot new Apple product sales?

As far as what the new iPod will entail, no one really knows besides the Jobs man and his developers. For my part, I'd like to see the iPhone minus the cellular capabilities, but leaving in some sort of Wi-Fi. And, frankly, I'm not really a fan of touch screen interfaces, but I can see their appeal: keeping a device compact/thin while still allowing for a nice, wide screen. No doubt about it--bigger is better in PVP screen land. OK, so let's forget the iPhone for a while and start speculating on the iPod again! No? Eh, it was worth a shot.
