The Detroit Auto Show

The Detroit Auto Show

Car Tech will be at the Detroit Auto Show during the week of January 9, 2006. We'll be posting new-model previews, videos, blog entries, and slide shows from this most notable of U.S. car shows. We'll be looking at how carmakers are responding to two major areas of change within the current automotive market: increasing electronics in the cabin and consumer demand for better mileage.

We expect to see a number of crossover cars at the show, such as the Mazda CX-7 and the Buick Enclave. This growing segment combines the ride height and upright sitting position of an SUV with the comfort and mileage economy of a car. But the SUV is not dead, as plenty of new offerings in this segment will be on display. The new Mercedes-Benz GL-Class will launch in Detroit, and we also expect to see the 2007 Cadillac Escalade.

On the smaller side of things, we'll take a look at the Nissan Versa and the Toyota Yaris. But more interestingly, we plan on taking a close look at the Nissan Urge, a highly anticipated small roadster. Nissan has released only sketches of the Urge for publication, but I've seen an actual picture, and it looks pretty cool.

As for innovative power trains, Mitsubishi will show off its progress on its in-wheel electric-drive motor research with the Concept-CT MIEV. We also expect to get our first look at the hybrid version of the Toyota Camry.
