Safety. It's what's for dinner.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) wants you to keep your home and holiday meals intact as we move into a time of year full of both cooking marathons and potential distractions. The CPSC released a fiery video showcasing those hazards. It's like "Scared Straight!" for amateur chefs.
The CPSC estimates there are 1,400 cooking fires in the US on Thanksgiving alone.
The footage showcases a stove-top pan fire and the horrifying effects of trying to douse it with water (spoiler alert: it blasts everywhere).
Next up, the CPSC lowers a whole turkey into an overfilled oil fryer (spoiler alert: it blasts everywhere). Once again, grease fires and water don't mix.
If you weren't already anxious about cooking for the holidays, you will be once you've seen this video. Just make sure to channel that fear into taking the CPSC's safety tips to heart. Don't leave food on the stove unattended, clean grease off of surfaces, keep flammable items away from the stove, have working smoke alarms and keep turkey fryers far away from structures.
Oh, and maybe just order takeout.
