Telltale Games is working on a new Walking Dead video game, a three-episode miniseries focusing on Michonne. Telltale Games

Telltale Games is feverishly working on its latest installment in the popular "="" video="" game="" series"="" shortcode="link" asset-type="article" uuid="75e76b68-8c86-11e2-b06b-024c619f5c3d" slug="the-walking-dead-game-is-not-what-you-think-and-thats-a-good-thing" link-text="" section="news" title="The Walking Dead game is not what you think, and that's a good thing" edition="us" data-key="link_bulk_key" api="{"id":null,"slug":null,"contentType":null,"edition":"us","topic":{},"metaData":{}}"> -- and it's all about Michonne, the brooding, katana-wielding zombie-slayer who's become a fast fan-favorite.

"In many ways, Michonne herself is a reflection of the world of The Walking Dead," said Robert Kirkman, a co-creator of the original comic book. "She is brutal and cold on the outside, but deep beneath what is broken, she remains hopeful, trying to claw her way out of the darkness that surrounds her. In our effort to bring the world of the comic and the world of the Telltale series closer together, there is no greater character than Michonne to help bridge that gap."

The company announced the game at E3 on June 15 (see all CNET's E3 coverage here), revealing that the three-episode miniseries will tell the previously untold story of what caused Michonne to briefly leave the group, and why she came back. The game will draw from the comic book, not the TV show, and will reveal what happens to Michonne between issues No. 126 and 139 of the comics.
AMC's hugely popular TV adaptation of the comics began in 2010 and ended its fifth season this past March. Both the comic and the original show of "The Walking Dead" open after a zombie outbreak has already torn through the US, when main character Rick Grimes wakes from a coma and finds himself in a wrecked but relatively unpopulated post-apocalyptic world. Telltale's game series expands on some of the more mysterious characters' backgrounds.

The announcement doesn't reveal if Danai Gurira, the actress who plays Michonne on the TV show, will lend her voice to the character in the game. A screenshot of Michonne posted to Telltale Games' blog looks more like the comic book character than Gurira, though it's still possible Gurira will lend her voice to the project as a way to bring the comics and the show closer together.

As a fan of the first two seasons of Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, I'm intrigued to see what lies in store for Michonne in this three-episode miniseries. The series will be available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS and Android, and you can expect to start slashing zombie brains when the first episode lands in the fall.
