Super-sick crushworthy cars: Measuring horsepower in millions
From the economically priced Vencer Sarthe (only $350K) to the $4 million Lamborghini Veneno and beyond, ultra-glam autos come in many flavors of crave. Here are some that make us drool.
When Britain's Salon Prive luxury car fair opens in September, visitors will get a chance to gawk at the Vencer Sarthe, a new hand-built supercar from the Netherlands. We're already planning to sneak in.
The Sarthe is one of many ridiculously crushworthy cars we wish we could afford, along with our recent fantasizing about $8 million gold speakers, luxury timepieces, and diamond-encrusted tablets and smartphones.
The Sarthe was named after the Circuit de la Sarthe course, a famed venue of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. It has a 510-horsepower, 8-cylinder engine; six-speed manual gearbox; and a top speed of 202 mph. It can do 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds.
The chassis is high-grade tubular steel and body panels of lightweight carbon. Inside, the cockpit is hand-stitched black leather surrounding a wide LCD instrument cluster in the center.
The Sarthe was unveiled in April by Prince Albert II of Monaco and certainly cuts the mustard when it comes to lavishness and performance. Sure, you could go faster than 200 mph, but at what price?
Only four Sarthes will be built this year, and two have been sold already. Ten will be offered in 2014. Pricing starts at 265,000 euros (about $350,000).
But that's almost a bargain compared with some of the most expensive, crushworthy cars we've seen recently.
If you have $2.1 million to invest, for instance, you could buy yourself the fastest roadster in the world, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. Small change, you say? Well double that and you can be the proud owner of a Lamborghini Veneno, one of the sickest sets of wheels we've ever seen.
