Sun's earning up: Steady as she goes

Sun continues to improve its financial performance, albeit slowly.

Sun reported another profitable quarter. Not amazingly so, but demonstrating steady improvement. Revenues for the second quarter of fiscal 2008 were $3.615 billion, a 1.4% improvement over its second quarter of FY 2007, and its total gross margin was up 3.5% to 48.5% of revenues. Net income for the second quarter of fiscal 2008 on a GAAP basis was $260 million, double that of the same period last year.

All in all, more good news for Sun, though paltry compared to Microsoft's earnings. But we're comparing Sun's earnings to Sun's earnings, not Microsoft's. Not everyone has a monopoly wind at their backs.

Most interestingly, Sun (like IBM and others) had double-digit growth in emerging markets like China and Eastern Europe. There seems to be a race to serve these growth markets while much of the developed world provides room for growth, but nothing to write home about.

I continue to believe these new markets are open source's to lose. Time will tell.

By the way, I didn't see any call-out of Sun's software revenue as the company has in the past few quarters. Perhaps there wasn't much to say on that score...?
