Sun to release midrange server

SAN FRANCISCO--Sun Microsystems is planning a new midrange Unix server to even out its product line, a company executive said Tuesday at the company's annual analyst conference here. Sun's current midrange and high-end server consists of the 12-processor Sun Fire 4800, the 24-processor 6800, the 36-processor 12K and the top-end 72-processor 15K, all systems that share the same processor-memory boards.

But Clark Masters, executive vice president of Sun's enterprise system products, said Sun's midrange product line "is kind of flat" and that customers should expect "additional offerings." For midrange Unix systems, Sun competes with up-and-coming IBM and well-established Hewlett-Packard.
