Sun clears Defense hurdle

The Defense Department has certified Sun Microsystems' Solaris operating system to run the department's Common Operating Environment (COE), software that gives different computers the same user interface, Sun said Wednesday. The department's Defense Information Systems Agency certified Solaris 8 on computers using Sun's IIi processor, though the bulk of Sun's product line today is based on the UltraSparc III and the company has just begun selling Solaris 9.

IBM in August achieved the Common Operating Environment certification.
