Trying to get a leg up in the telco market, Sun Microsystems today acquired British telecommunications equipment vendor Integrated Micro Products for $96.1 million.
"The telco market represents one of our largest and fastest-growing markets, and this agreement will allow us to create a presence in it," said Ed Zander, president of Sun Microsystems Computer Company, the hardware arm of Sun Microsystems.
IMP will operate as a business unit within Sun's enterprise server group, a division of Sun Microsystems Computer Company. Sun will also integrate IMP's technology within its enterprise server line, including IMP's fault-tolerant architecture, telecommunications equipment, and system software designed to support telecommunications standards. IMP uses Sun's SuperSPARC TM processors to run its ft-SPARC TM computer system for telco service providers.
Sun officials said they expect to conclude the acquisition by late April. IMP reported $11.5 million in revenue in 1995.
