Capcom has detailed the upcoming Street Fighter V beta, which is set to begin on July 23 at 6 p.m. PT on PlayStation 4.

According to Capcom community manager Peter Rosas, the game will have a total of six characters to play, but will launch initially with four, with Cammy and Birdie joining later.

"To set expectations clearly, the beta will roll out with four characters playable immediately, with Birdie and Cammy becoming playable on Saturday, July 25," said Rosas.

"The reason for their delayed release is that in addition to testing out the net code, we're also testing out our new content delivery system."

The beta will not feature a local versus mode during the beta as the "primary purpose of the beta is to test the online functionality."

The game will boot directly into the character select screen, before they are moved into training mode while an opponent is found. Once a challenger is selected, the game moves into the versus screen and then into the match.

"While players are awaiting their match, they'll be training in the Grid," Rosas explained, talking about the stages available in the beta. "Versus matches will take place in either the Bustling Side Street (China), Terminal Station (London), or in the brand new stage the Forgotten Waterfall.

"Each of the stages has been inspired by various locales throughout the world with the Forgotten Waterfall's inspiration being directly pulled from New Zealand."

Capcom has said it intends for the beta to be the "largest and most ambitious online beta program in franchise history." The beta be "essential to collect feedback and to ensure that Street Fighter V is the best iteration yet."

The beta is scheduled to last for five days. Although Street Fighter V is also being released on PC -- with support for cross-platform play -- Capcom has not yet announced plans for a PC beta.

North Americans can get access to the beta by pre-ordering on PSN, Best Buy, Amazon, or GameStop. European PlayStation Network users can use the Street Fighter V beta enroll to sign up.
