If it weren't for lousy reception, many of us would love to use our mobile phones as primary lines in the house as well as on the road. But Hal Stern offers new hope with his home cellular system, which comprises a "cellular repeater, including a YAGI antenna, a nicely shielded cable and a small AC-powered transmitter."

The result? Five full bars of service. And lest you question his credentials, Stern is the software chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems.
