Here's that mashup of 'Star Wars' and 'True Detective' you wanted

A not so long time ago, in a galaxy very near, a cable show called "True Detective" became a hit by combining intense acting, devastating cinematography and hints of Lovecraftian horror. And that was just the first season. It seems strange to imagine mixing that show with the action-heavy, Western-in-space world of "Star Wars," but somehow it works.

YouTube user Star Wars Minute created a mashup video that brings "Star Wars" visuals to HBO's "True Detective" opening. The short is in honor of the finale for the second season of "True Detective," which aired Sunday. The credits use the theme song from the first season, "Far From Any Road" by The Handsome Family, rather than "Nevermind" by Leonard Cohen, the song chosen for the most recent series.

A side-by-side comparison shows just how close the Stormtroopered credits are to the original. It kicks off with a backward ride through the Death Star trench. The names of familiar "Star Wars" actors float across the screen. Images superimposed on characters' faces and washed-out colors invoke the look of the artsy first-season opening.

The mashup works beautifully, turning the familiar "Star Wars" universe into a brooding contemplation of galactic strife. It will make you wish Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were cast in "The Force Awakens," the new "Star Wars" movie due to open in December. Imagine Jedi Rust Cohle saying, "I get a bad taste in my mouth out here. Aluminum, ash, like you can smell a Death Star." Pure gold.
