LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) and Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy) have already gotten an taste -- according to the Associated Press, video game giant Ubisoft gave the three Star Trek actors an early peek at a brand new VR game dubbed .
Set to be unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on Monday and hitting shelves this fall, Bridge Crew thrusts players into one of four distinct roles: helm, weapons, engineering or barking out orders as captain. Whether you want to play a headstrong Kirk or methodical Picard is reportedly up to you, though the game is set in J.J. Abrams' rebooted Star Trek universe instead of the original one.
Players captain a ship called the Aegis, which is reportedly 90 percent similar to the Enterprise, and will play through a variety of missions while searching for a new home world for the population of Vulcan.
While we don't know what gameplay is like (beyond a rough description of 360-degree views of a Star Trek bridge inside the headset and the ability to activate various parts of the ship with motion controllers), the AP makes it sound like banter between players will be part of the fun:
"Keep us in range of that Klingon," orders La Forge.
"I'm trying to phaser him!" barks Seven.
"Do you need some engine power for that?" asks McCoy.
Which sure makes Bridge Crew sound a lot like Artemis: Spaceship Bridge Simulator, a cult-classic indie LAN party game that plays out much the same way. I have many fond memories of shouting out "I CANNA GIVE YA ANY MORE POWER, CAP'N!" in a terrible Scottish accent. Here's what that game is like to play. You may also remember 2002's Star Trek: Bridge Commander, a single-player game that supported voice commands.
Update, 10:45p.m. PT: I got to try the game. Read my hands-on with Star Trek: Bridge Crew here!
