Sprint Nextel to offer location-based search
Sprint Nextel yesterday announced a new local search application called which combines a cell phone's integrated GPS chip with local directory information from InfoSpace. In contrast with other search applications, through which users must enter a zip code, Find It will automatically determine a user's location from their phone, then provide a list of nearby businesses, ATMs, and movie theaters. The monthly fee will be $2.99, and though all cell phones are now required to have GPS, it's unclear whether all the carrier's models will support Find It. According to News.com, Sprint Nextel said it's launching to make GPS services useful to customers but also to boost revenue. Oh, come on, Sprint, everyone knows it's all about the dollar signs.
