Sony claims it is the slimmest and lightest 10-inch tablet in the world. Australia will have its chance to see for itself when the Sony Xperia Tablet Z hits stores on 6 June. Pre-orders are now available through the Sony Australia website.

The Xperia Tablet Z is a well-detailed piece of hardware. A Snapdragon quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, a gorgeous 1920x1200 HD screen, an excellent mobile camera, FM Radio, infrared for controlling your TV, near-field communication (NFC), MHL and a long-term evolution (LTE) model, this is a piece of hardware that reflects Sony's effort to bring together technology from across all of its divisions to create a singular, stand-out mobile product. With the addition of water resistance (up to 1 metre for 30 minutes), it is a tablet that definitely sets itself apart.

Sony has priced the Xperia Tablet Z to exactly match the equivalent Apple iPad product range. The 16GB Wi-Fi model is AU$539, the 32GB Wi-Fi model is AU$649 and the 16GB LTE model is AU$679. This prices the Z in a higher bracket than the rest of the Android tablet market, though few have carried specs that match this tablet's quality.

Sony is also offering "limited edition" collections for Sony enthusiasts: 50 packages are being offered at AU$1499, featuring the Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z smartphone and Sony MDR1 one-touch enabled Bluetooth headphones. The package includes product personalisation, though we're not exactly sure what that includes. Clearly, you need to be a serious Sony fan to walk this path.

The Sony Xperia Z smartphone has been one of our favourite Android phones this year, and the CNET preview of the Xperia Tablet Z said "it makes a strong case for best full-size Android tablet yet". It will be interesting to see how many buyers agree, come June.
